Opacities (2018)

for unspecified woodwind, live electronics, lighting, and structure

With Opacities, I wanted to explore the idea of filtration: of sound, of light, of experience. The bassoonist performs a variety of multiphonics that they themselves choose, which are electronically manipulated to enhance the inherent brightness within to varying degrees. The performer resides within an illuminated prism; in my mind, the piece parallels the ever-present issues of understanding that have always plagued society (but seem particularly divisive today), and I hope the work sheds light on the individual perceptions that produce our realities.

Opacities was written for Clifton Joey Guidry III, and was premiered at the inaugural program of Sense Baltimore at EMP Collective on May 17, 2018. Videography: Gabe Dinsmoor.
